     Dr. Phyllis Bivins-Hudson is a native of Suffolk, Virginia, however, she has been a resident of New Jersey for 50 years. She is an advocate for education and an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a private, not-for-profit public service organization whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. The sorority has a strong focus on advocacy for scholarship, which is important to Dr. Hudson.


     Phyllis Hudson has been an educator for 42 years, having begun her career as an English Language Arts middle school teacher in East Orange, NJ where she taught more than 16 years. She taught middle school students for an additional 12 years in South Orange, NJ. After leaving the classroom, Dr. Hudson continued her career in Paterson, NJ as an administrator. She has since become semi-retired, but says, "I'm not tired", so she continues her work in education, currently as an education consultant for the iLearn Charter School Organization as its District Mentor Coordinator. Dr. Hudson is a co-founder and instructor for Rutgers University's Alternate Route Teacher Training Program, since its inception in 2003. She also works as an independent education consultant for Pearson Education and does education consulting in her tri-state area including New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.


     Dr. Hudson has been listed in Who’s Who Among American Teachers twice, was the recipient of the Governors Teacher of the Year Award, and has authored published poetry and several handbooks, A Handbook for Mentors: Helping New Teachers Succeed & Persist, under a grant funded through the Diversifying the Teacher Pipeline from the New Jersey Department of Education, District Mentoring For Quality Induction Program (Mentee|Mentor Edition: Participant Workbook) exclusively for the iLearn Charter School Organization, The Back to School Survival Kit: A Jump-Start Workshop, and The At-Risk Student. Her latest work is Flying on Broken Wings, One Woman's Journey from Poverty to Prominence.


     Her qualifications in the field of education include a BA in Elementary Education, an MA  in English Literature, a Supervision Certification, Principal License, and a doctorate degree in Education Leadership. Dr. Bivins-Hudson also completed a portion of her graduate work in English Literature at Bread Loaf School of English, Oxford University, England.
